During this exciting 3 hour roundtable, our impressive panel of speakers will be posed with (3) training scenarios/issues and will discuss how they would tackle each. A group discussion will then follow, working through hypotheticals, possible subsequent issues, solutions and much more. Anyone and everyone involved in Scent Work will benefit from attending this event!
1. Handler reports their dog finds a hide and immediately shoots off. The dog is too subtle for the handler to read. The handler has attempted to return the dog to a hide so they would better communicate, however the dog refuses to do either. This happens in training and at trial. The team easily earned their ORT, NW1 and AKC Novice titles but are now struggling in AKC Advanced and NW2.
2. Handler reports their dog was flat when training and trialing in Scent Work. Handler decided to switch from using food rewards to toy rewards. Now the dog is too high, exhibiting a total lack of focus when searching, screaming at the start line, barking at the handler throughout and offering aggressive alerts if the toy is not immediately provided. Any attempts to revert back to using food rewards caused the dog to quit or not search at all.
3. Handler reports their dog suddenly started offering false alerts, obsessing about distractors and marking in the search area at trial. However these issues are not apparent when training. The team has been training for a while and competes at the upper-levels in multiple venues.
