- New Year to Breathe
As a new year looms, it is as good time as any to look back, reflect and attempt to set the tone for the next twelve months. “But what does that have to do with Scent Work?!” A whole lot when you stop to think about it. The past few years have been, well, trying, to say the very least. The entire globe has undergone a massive trauma event and it felt as though 2022 was a way for everyone to rush to experience some sense of normalcy, catching up on what they may have missed out on the years before. More people than ever flocked to play the sniffy game with their dogs (a WONDERFUL thing!) and wanted to make as much progress as they possibly could. Large numbers of individuals and clubs tackled the prospect of learning how to host Scent Work trials, attempting to offer even more sniffy opportunities for dogs and their handlers. Handlers leapt at this opportunity, filling their calendars to the brim with events of every variety week after week after week. Trial officials stepped up to fill the demand, having not a spare day for as far as the eye could see. Instructors worked feverously, finding new and creative ways to provide the training and learning opportunities their clients clamored for. “That all sounds great!” It is also exhausting and not overly sustainable. There has been a fair amount of burnout in 2022 across the board. Dogs exhibiting dips in their enthusiasm to play, simply due to being tired. Handlers getting stuck in their heads, feeling as though they were “not doing enough” if every waking moment wasn't jampacked with something. Trial hosts were exhausted, barely having a moment to recoup from one event before receiving notices screaming, “WHEN IS THE NEXT ONE?” Trial officials and instructors fell ill or seemed to lose the love for their craft, suffering from empathy fatigue and feeling as though they were failing, even though that was the farthest from the truth. “…That all sounds bad.” It is. 2022 was the year of catching up. 2023 should be the year of breathing in. When it comes to Scent Work, we are living through a Renaissance of sorts. There is a plethora of opportunities to partake in, be it training or trialing. It can be overwhelming at times! Instead of panicking or rushing, breathe and take a moment to decide: what is going to work best for you and your dog? Trust me, these opportunities are not going anywhere! If anything, there will be even MORE opportunities for you to enjoy! When you do settle on what you want to do, make a commitment to add in a rest day for every event you sign up for. That’s right, a day when you will do NO Scent Work at all. Yes, you can do TOO MUCH Scent Work and the results are not pretty. Instead, use that rest day to fully appreciate your dog in some other way. Taking a hike. Going to the beach. Laying around on the couch for a lovely cuddle session together. Practice being still and allowing both you and your dog to fully recoup, rest and recover. Allow your dog some time to themselves to enjoy a chew as you partake in some other activity or hobby. This is not time wasted, it is time savored. “Fine! Is that it?” Remember, the theme is breathing in. Take a deep breath and think through your shortcomings from the past year. How did they undercut your own progress? How can you learn from those mistakes and avoid those same pitfalls in 2023? For myself, it is all about balance. Identifying ways to address and deal with my own mental hang-ups and self-doubt while not falling into the same old habits that feed into them. Take some of my own advice for once. There is no need to take everything so damn seriously! That means when it comes to Scent Work, or any type of dog training or dog sport activities, practice and train, but not until “we get it perfectly right”. Submit a virtual entry. Go to a trial. Put myself out there and try. Perfection doesn’t exist. We can always improve but that is the beauty of it – we will never be “done”. Know that I am a workaholic and will put work ahead of everything else. It is also a convenient excuse to not put myself out there when it comes to training or competing, "Oh, but look at all the work I have to do..." sort of thing. That approach is not going to work anymore now that I am sharing my life with a dog once again. Remind myself how miserable those “dog-less” years were. Do not add to my already painfully long list of regrets. The work can wait, appreciate the dog instead. My most important goal is to be kinder to myself. This is going to be SO HARD TO DO, but it is necessary. Did I overextend myself and am now too tired to do the million-and-one things on my never-ending list? Breathe. It will be okay. Prioritize what must be done and break the other stuff down into smaller pieces. Have a cuddle session with Ozzie to refill my tank. Have the brownie. Try again next time. Do a fun finding-of-treats search session. Marvel at how awesome Ozzie is at hunting even though he is brand new to this. Allow myself the opportunity to learn from others. Take the webinar or class. Read the book. Don’t be so hard on myself and don't constantly put myself on the backburner. I cannot help anyone else if I am too burnt out to take care of myself. See a pattern? Breathe. Try my best, know I can always improve and breathe some more. That is how I am going to head into the new year, breathing, having fun, learning, improving and relishing in the required daily cuddle sessions with the tiny, ridiculously adorable creature known as Mr. Ozzie. How are you going to set the tone for the new year? Following a serious neck and back injury, Dianna was forced to retire from in-person dog training. But she was not ready to give up her passion! Dianna is incredibly grateful to the amazingly talented group of instructors who have joined PDU, DSU and SWU and she looks forward to the continued growth of PDU, DSU and SWU and increased learning opportunities all of these online dog training platforms can provide. - Scent Work is Magical
Has the brilliance of your dog ever hit you like a ton of bricks? Do you find yourself gobsmacked watching your dog work their tail off in a search? Are you learning the small ways in which they communicate to you from start to finish? Do you feel a deeper connection and understanding with them? If not, that is okay. It will come. These are byproducts of Scent Work and occur in the background without us even noticing. However, the benefits of each cannot be overstated. To truly see your dog for the first time as the complicated, thinking, opinionated and talented creature they are who CHOOSES to share their world with us is an unforgettable experience. Their ability to solve odor puzzles can be exhilarating, addicting and make us feel quite inferior. We stand in the shadow of their greatness and wonder where our place is on the team. We feel discombobulated handling our leash or trying to read their tells. Attempting to grasp the dynamics of an odor we cannot see, nor experience, can be daunting. Then there are those “other teams” that seem to have everything together, excel at everything as we seemingly bumble along, causing our light to dim even more. Then, just when you feel the walls of self-doubt creeping in, you do another practice search with your dog, and they demonstrate you are indeed a crucial part of puzzle. They choose to play this game with you. To welcome you into their world and share the experience with their person. Your dog beams when they find a hide and looks to you as if to say, “Did you see me, I found it! We did it!” Even when we waffle in making an alert call, our dogs will patiently wait for our tiny human brains to catch up and are delighted when it finally does. The journey into this sniffing world can be a bumpy one at times. It can feel alien, so unlike other journeys we may have taken with our dogs. Yet it is a magical journey. Allow yourself to be blanketed by the joy that is searching with your dog. Smile. Laugh. Marvel at this experience you have with this little furry creature. These are special occasions. Treat them as such and go have some sniffy fun with your pup. - Power of Choice in Scent Work
Think about how it feels when someone tells you to do something. You may grumble under your breath, roll your eyes, or just think to yourself, “Well, now I don’t WANT to do it!”. Juxtapose this feeling to when you choose to do this task all on your own. Suddenly, the dynamic is entirely different. This is the power of the choice, in a nutshell. Readjusting how the participant perceives their role within the interaction. Having the opportunity to CHOOSE is empowering and can increase engagement and enthusiasm. The same applies when training or working with our dogs. But what does this look like within the context of Scent Work? CHOOSING TO SOLVE THE PUZZLE Quite simply, this is the dog having the freedom to see the odor puzzle to the end or saying, “Nope, I’m not doing that.” “WHY ON EARTH WOULD I WANT TO PROMOTE THAT?!” So that you may enjoy an active conversation with your dog and realize when they lack the skills to complete a search, are too hot, too tired, too overwhelmed or you have simply pushed too far, too fast. The fact that you and I cannot experience odor is a major factor in all of this. If we could just visualize what an odor plume was doing within a space, to actually SEE how incredibly complex it may or may not be, our dogs would be much better off! Take these two mazes for instance. One is clearly more straightforward than the other. If you were teaming up with a friend who was recuperating from back surgery and suffered from severe anxiety, I would sincerely hope you would opt for them to tackle Maze A as opposed to Maze B! But what if you didn’t know how difficult the mazes were beforehand and you told your friend to tackle Maze B? In the middle of their attempt, your friend throws their back out, starts to panic and pleads for help. They are choosing to stop trying to solve the maze. I would sincerely hope you would honor this choice and step in to help them, as opposed to standing there proclaiming, “Well, just try harder, it is the whole point of the game!” This same dynamic applies to our dogs. WE CANNOT FORCE THIS We must come to terms with the fact that we cannot force our dogs to use their nose. They must WANT to play the game. This necessitates that our training be designed to cultivate and promote this desire to play in incrementally challenging situations. To offer our dogs a multitude of choices where the “correct” choice, of seeing the odor puzzle to the end, is the most obvious and beneficial choice to them. However, for this to work, it must be a two-way channel of communication. If our dog clearly demonstrates that they CANNOT solve a given puzzle, then we need to honor this and pull them from the search. Doing so WITHOUT any negative emotion or reactions, allowing them to rest and then making any necessary adjustments to better promote success later on is the name of the game. If we are thoughtful and incremental with how we progress, our dogs will find that choosing to use their nose, to play the game and find their hide worked...and dogs do what works! Thus, even when posed with a challenging puzzle or environment, the dog will CHOOSE to stay engaged and give it their all to find their cookie opportunity. However, none of this happens overnight nor is it guaranteed! The way we design our training exercises and reward our dogs have an enormous impact on their calculation of whether choosing to find their hide is indeed the best choice for them to make. CHOOSING THE HIDE OVER THE ENVIRONMENT Our essential odor hides are inherently BORING! Without our training intervention, they are meaningless to our dogs. These hides do not move. They do not run away. They could not be more boring to a dog if they tried. The environment, on the other hand, is a cacophony of super exciting and fun stimuli! Speaking solely about odor, our dogs are bombarded with an insane number of stimuli every time they step the start line. Each competing for their attention. “There used to be some yummy food here, pay attention to me.” “No, look at where the chipmunk was hanging out only a moment before, pay attention to ME!” “Forget that, look at this awesome doggie text, pay attention to MEEEEE!” You get the idea. Hate to break it to you, but you cannot turn your dog's nose off to all those other stimuli nor can you force them to ignore this exciting stuff and solely focus on their hide. The dog must CHOOSE to find their hide instead of being invested in the environment. Once we truly allow this distinction to sink in, we can more effectively design our searches to highlight what we want: the dog to CHOOSE their hide over the environment. Yet one of the most common pitfalls is doing just the opposite: placing all the attention and focus on the DISTRACTOR as the hide fades into the background. Setting up exercises where the dog is enticed to make the correct CHOICE to find their hide and then heavily rewarded for doing so is the name of the game. Not forcing them. Not nagging them. Rather, being creative and thoughtful in how we design our training, so the DOG decides ON THEIR OWN to make the right choice...because we took the time to make this the most obvious choice for them. Essentially, the secret is to make this so the dog thinks finding their hide was their idea in the first place…when in reality, we designed the search to work out that way. The benefit of using that big human brain of ours. FINAL THOUGHTS Leading the search. Demonstrating independence. Having confidence within the space. These are all skillsets and benchmarks touted within Scent Work and are what training programs should strive to achieve. At the end of the day, the common thread that runs through all of them is the power of choice being granted to the dog. The dog choosing the step out into the space and take the lead as opposed to following behind their handler, deferring to them, as they point out every square inch of the search area. The dog choosing to independently work their way toward a deep accessible hide far underneath a table to get as close to source as possible, as opposed to fringe alerting on the outside of the table. The dog choosing to enter a large, booming interior space with high ceilings and slippery floors to find their hide as opposed to the handler dragging them in. All our training should be designed to promote the dog to choose, to enhance our ability to listen and heed when the dog may need an adjustment to be successful. How can you leverage the power of choice when training Scent Work with your dog?
