Equipment, Camera Setup, Basic Editing, and Understanding What You See

Want to video your searches but don’t know where to start? Maybe you’re unsure what equipment to use, where to put it, or how you’re supposed to record while handling your dog. Or you’ve tried, and every attempt seems to go sideways.

This webinar introduces the process of recording, editing, and reviewing searches to support your training. We’ll discuss equipment options, including phones, action cameras, tripods, and mounts, along with how to set them up.

We’ll compare handler point-of-view recording, a separately positioned camera that captures you handling, and having someone film for you. We’ll examine the educational advantages and limitations of each perspective and how your recording choices affect what you can learn.

A basic demonstration will cover transferring footage to a computer and editing in CapCut, including trimming clips, changing playback speed, and zooming in.

We’ll then look at reviewing the dog’s behavior, the handler’s actions, and the search conditions. We’ll discuss separating observation from interpretation, recognizing what the footage cannot tell us, and using the review to guide further training.
