The sense of smell continues to be strong in our senior dogs and scent-related searches are great mental and physical activities to keep our dogs healthy! As with people, the more brain processing we can promote, the more enduring cognitive skills will be. Whether it is starting an older dog with primary searches or taking a retired champion out for some odor searching, the focus and processing required continues to exercise brain and body! On the other hand, as our dogs are aging, their endurance and physical capabilities will change. They may have more issues reaching elevated hides, crouching underneath chairs, they may experience a dip in their overall stamina and mental acuity.
This webinar will discuss how we can adjust our training approaches, outline the types of exercises to try, which organizations to compete with, whether retirement is an option and more to help our senior dogs still be successful as they play the sniffing game. We will discuss introducing nosework to aging dogs not previously exposed to the game as a way to increase motor and mental functions!
